Mountains of the Moon by Janice Clark
Mountains of the Moon is a pre-teen book dealing with a young girl, Sammy, and her precious cat BB (short for Princess Buttermilk Biscuit). Sammy lives with her mother, and her father is living elsewhere, making her an immediately relatable character for many young children with one parent largely missing from their lives. She exhibits many strong qualities throughout the book, including ingenuity, curiosity, and the ability to let go of someone she loves. All too often it is easier to selfishly hang on to those we care about, and in learning to let go Sammy shows a great maturity of character.
As a father, and a friend of cats everywhere, this book was a very enjoyable read both for myself and my nine year old son, the most important critic of all. It is a perfect length, short enough to keep the attention of the 7-11 (roughly) year old set, with pleasant black and white pictures at the beginning of each chapter.
This is one of those ‘good books’ that all parents enjoy. Books that teach a lesson, without making it seem like they’re teaching a lesson. Books that can be read over and over at bedtime in particular, or any time.
Overall, Mountains of the Moon is a fantastic children’s story, and I would not be surprised to see it become a great children’s classic.
